What does an oral and maxillofacial surgeon do?

An oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist might:

  • Extract teeth – particularly impacted wisdom teeth or otherwise problematic teeth.
  • Perform surgeries to correct misaligned jaws (orthognathic surgery), improve appearance or function, and repair problems such as fractures and injuries.
  • Care for patients with tumors and cysts of the jaws.
