Periodontics
Sidebar
A periodontist is a dental specialist focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases and the placement of dental implants.
What does a periodontist do?
A periodontist might:
- Diagnose and treat infections of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.
- Use a technique called "scaling and root planing" to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline.
- Perform surgical procedures such as flap surgery, bone grafting, gum grafting and sinus lift.
- Place dental implants.
- Offer esthetic procedures such as crown lengthening and gum contouring.
- Provide ongoing care and maintenance plans to help patients manage their gum health and prevent recurrence of periodontal disease.
