Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology
Sidebar
Oral and maxillofacial pathology is a specialized field that focuses on the identification and treatment of lesions and diseases affecting the oral cavity, jaws and surrounding tissues — including oral cancer and precancerous conditions.
Just as your family physician might refer you to a dermatologist for a skin condition, a medical or dental professional might refer you to an oral pathologist for potential diseases of the mouth.
What does an oral pathologist do?
Whether working directly with patients or with medical and dental professionals as a consultant, an oral pathologist might:
- Examine tissue samples (biopsies) under a microscope to determine the causes, nature and effects of various oral diseases.
- Take part in diagnosis for systemic diseases (such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders and certain viral infections) that may be associated with symptoms in the mouth.
- Work with dental and medical teams to develop appropriate treatment plans for conditions affecting the oral cavity, jaws and surrounding tissues.
