Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of issues related to the dental pulp and surrounding tissues. Endodontists often handle complex cases involving tooth pain, trauma and infection.
What does an endodontics specialist do?
An endodontics specialist might:
- Diagnose dental pain and identify issues related to the dental pulp and surrounding tissues.
- Perform root canal therapy – a procedure that involves removing infected or damaged pulp from the tooth, cleaning and shaping the root canals and sealing the root canals to prevent future infection.
- Treat dental trauma to address injuries to teeth and surrounding structures.
- Conduct surgical procedures, such as apicoectomy, to remove the tip of the tooth root.
- Bleach non-vital teeth (also known as internal bleaching) to lighten discolored teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.
