Special Care Dentistry
Sidebar
Special care dentistry (sometimes called special needs dentistry) focuses on meeting the needs of people of all ages who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, behavioral issues, physical limitations and other special needs.
What does a special care dentist do?
Special care dentists perform a wide range of services like exams and care for issues like cavities, toothaches, mouth sores and dental injuries. To meet the needs of people who have disabilities, they may also:
- Have greater accessibility at the practice.
- Provide a sensory-friendly environment.
- Use other techniques to lessen the patient's anxiety.
- Perform dental procedures under sedation if required.
- Educate patients and caregivers on overcoming challenges to maintaining oral health.
- Educate patients and caregivers on oral health concerns related to their diagnosis.
